Shortly before Eros Cinema closed its doors in 2017, Art Deco Mumbai Trust hosted students from Columbia University, New York for a ‘Bombay Deco Dekho’ walking tour. The walk culminated in a lecture by Prof. Mustansir Dalvi at the preview theatre in Eros. It was perhaps the last such public event held there before its unceremonious closure.
While the theatre is open to the public now after six years, it is in a new and evolved avatar. This video captures the sentiment of a time when the iconic theatre’s future remained uncertain. Enjoy this lecture by Prof. Dalvi that discusses Art Deco’s emergence on the shores of Bombay and what led to the widespread adaptation of this style that had no precedent. Anchored in aspects of Bombay’s climate, geographical position and socio-cultural composition, he explains how the style was embraced across the city.
