While Art Deco made up much of Bombay from the 1930s to the 50s, it debuted a decade prior in Paris, at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. Celebrate this World Art Deco Day by winding the clock back to Art Deco’s origins, tracing its beginnings and journey before it arrives in Mumbai to shape this city. This World Art Deco Day is special as we celebrate the Centenary Year of this historic style. In the wake of the First World War, the world came together to find a new and modern means of expression – one that looked to the future even as it drew from the past – and Art Deco was born. From modern designs of buildings, furniture and films, to geographies around the world – there’s a lot to unpack in the Art Deco story. Come along! This event was co-hosted with Alliance Française de Bombay to mark the beginning of the Art Deco Centenary Year.
